Shakira Meltan, a medical student in the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine at the Odessa campus, has been awarded a 2024 STFM Foundation Student Scholarship from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) to participate in the 2024 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education.

This highly competitive scholarship is awarded to some of the best and brightest medical students from across the country. In addition to recognizing a strong commitment to academic family medicine through scholastic, volunteer and leadership pursuits, this award acknowledges the recipient’s strong potential for a career in academic medicine. Only 23 awards were given for 2024.

Marisyl de la Cruz, M.D., chair of the 2024 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, added “All STFM Foundation recipients receive free registration to attend and present a poster at the 2024 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, scheduled for February 8-11, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Meltan plans to present a poster at the conference, titled: Advancing Med Students' Learning in Community Health via Population Health Elective.

“The 2024 Medical Student Education Steering Committee congratulates Shakira  Meltan, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine on this award” added Dr de la Cruz.
