In a list published Sept. 12 by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the Texas Tech University System, including the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), ranked 75th among the Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2022.
Lance R. McMahon, Ph.D., TTUHSC senior vice president for research and innovation, helped TTUHSC secure its own NAI membership during the summer and join Texas Tech University in NAI membership. He said NAI membership and this latest ranking are a reflection of the TTU System’s dedication to innovation and collaboration.
“All of our intellectual property disclosures, patents and licensing dollars are up,” McMahon pointed out. “In fact, all of our commercialization metrics at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center are at the highest levels in the history of the university.”
McMahon credited the increased metrics and Top 100 ranking to the hard-working and creative faculty inventors, and the efforts of the dedicated personnel of the TTU System Office of Research Commercialization and its director, Cameron P. Smith, J.D.
“Our strategic mission at TTUHSC — to transform health care through innovation and collaboration — are not just words,” McMahon added. “Our faculty, staff and students are carrying out this mission through commercialization excellence.”
NAI has published the Top 100 Worldwide Universities list annually since 2013. NAI created the new Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents list to highlight and celebrate American innovation and to showcase the universities which play a large role in advancing the innovation ecosystem within the U.S. and beyond.
NAI compiles its calendar-year Top 100 lists using data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Top 100 placement includes all named assignees listed on the patent. This newest list is meant to provide a more focused view of the national innovation landscape and the contributions made by U.S. academic institutions. NAI also plans to track other, more focused areas of the innovation landscape.
