Joint Commission Tips: Medication Security

It’s easy to think of pills, ointments or things that you inject or infuse as medication because these items must be kept locked up in exam rooms and procedure rooms.

It is important to remember that anything marked “RX only” is considered a medication and must be kept secure. Some examples of “RX only” items often found unlocked in exam and procedure rooms, or on unlocked procedure carts are:
  • Lidocaine
  • Saline
  • Unit does vials for hand held nebulizer treatments

Also, prescription pads should never be left in areas accessible to patients.
