Join TTUHSC in commemorating World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is held on December 1 each year. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and remember people who have died from HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. The first World AIDS Day was held in 1988.
World AIDS Day is an important opportunity to recognize that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is not over. Globally an estimated 35 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 2.1 million individuals worldwide became newly infected with HIV in 2013. In the U.S., more than 1.1 million people are living with HIV, and almost 1 in 6 (15.8%) are unaware of their infection. About 1 in 4 new HIV infections is among youth ages 13-24. The 2014 theme for World AIDS Day is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.” To reach the goal of an AIDS-free generation, we must continue to increase awareness, improve education and outcomes, and demand social justice.

World AIDS Day Flower Wall will be available in the ACB Lobby Wednesday – Friday. Donations for flowers for the wall will be accepted 11:00AM-1:00PM. Cash only please! Proceeds will be donated to Project CHAMPS, a local non-profit organization that provides counseling and support services to low income HIV-positive individuals and prevention and risk reduction education to Lubbock and the surrounding counties. World AIDS Day events are being co-sponsored by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Gay-Straight Alliance, Global Health Alliance, Medical Ethics and Humanities Society, and Office of Global Health.
