Dr. Leslie Shen, Associate Professor of Pathology, TTUHSC, Lubbock campus is leading
a 12- week research study, “Effect of Tocotrienol (vitamin E isomers) on Bone Health”.
We need postmenopausal women (at least 1 year after menopausal) for the study. Participation
is free of charge.
The long-term goal of the study is to develop a new strategy featuring a dietary supplement
(i.e., tocotrienols) for alleviating bone loss in postmenopausal women. Women are
four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men because of a decrease in estrogen
level after menopause in conjunction with generally lighter and thinner bones. Over
half of postmenopausal women will experience a bone fracture as the result of osteoporosis.
There is an increasing body of evidence suggesting the importance of oxidative stress
in bone metabolism and bone loss.
Our hypotheses is that 12 weeks of tocotrienols supplements will benefit bone remodeling
as measured by bone turnover markers in postmenopausal osteopenia women compared to
those only receiving placebo. The improvement in bone turnover markers associated
with bone remodeling will be correlated with the changes in oxidative stress.
