Texas Tech Physicians hosted its 6th annual executive leadership retreat Sept. 14. The theme for the 2012 retreat was “Clarity – 2012 and Beyond.” Clarity was chosen as the theme for the event by CEO Brent Magers.

“The mission and vision has been established for Texas Tech Physicians,” Magers said. “So, the path has been established. It’s now time for clarity, and by this, I mean to shine a big and bright light on the path so nobody trips along the way.”

That bright light is guiding the TTP business plan. The current  plan ended in August, so the goal of the 2012 retreat was to generate ideas and build the foundation for the next three-year plan. Magers spoke about the value of formulating a business plan in a story in his opening address at the 2012 retreat.

“You have all heard of New Year’s resolutions. Recently, an experiment was conducted on the actual achievement of New Year’s resolutions,” Magers said. “This study found that the resolution achievement was 52 percent higher for people who actually wrote down their resolutions. What does this say? It means that the work we are doing here today and building the new TTP business plan on paper, will give us a better chance of achieving the results we desire.”

Following Magers’ address was a guest speech from Texas Tech University business professor Jerry Stevens, who spoke about the successful execution of business plans from his previous work experience at Southwestern Bell. Stevens also praised the leadership of TTP for taking the time to dedicate a day to building the business plan.

Next, the retreat attendees divided into groups for a team building game titled, “The Acronym Game.” In this game, the group clarified the definition of three key business plan accelerator words through the use of acronyms: UNITY, RESPECT and INNOVATE. Each word will accelerate the success of the new TTP business plan. Here are a few examples of the group’s acronym definitions from the game:

UNITY – Unified, Nurture, Integrity, Together, Yeoman’s Effort

RESPECT– Recognized, Engaging, Supportive, Purposeful, Enthusiastic, Credible, Trust

INNOVATE – Imaginative, Niche, New-fangled, Original, Value-added, Adventurous, Transformative, Energy

The purpose of the acronym game was to get the group’s creative juices flowing for the  afternoon TTP business plan sessions . The group was mindful of the key accelerator words when working on the new TTP business plan. The rough draft of the plan ideas generated from the 2012 retreat will be given to each COPIC champion for review. From there, an official rough draft of the TTP business plan will be posted on SPIRIT 5 for feedback from all employees. Finally, after all feedback is gathered, a final version of the business plan will be approved by senior leadership by later this fall.
