King George Medical University in Lucknow, India, honored Surendra K. Varma, M.D.,
with the award of Doctor of Science Honoris Causa.
King George Medical University was established in 1905 and is the fifth oldest medical
institution in India. It is also one of the top 10 medical institutions in India.
Varma received the honor for being an outstanding academician, clinician and teacher
“who has made India proud with his professional achievements and scientific contributions,
keeping the Indian flag flying high at the foreign soil.”
Varma, who serves as the associate dean for Graduate Medical Education and Resident
Affairs, the Ted Hartman Endowed Chair in Medical Education and University Distinguished
Professor and vice chair in the Department of Pediatrics, received his medical degree
and post studies in pediatrics from King George Medical University.
He received pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology training at Harvard Medical School.
Varma, with then Texas Senator Kent Hance, was instrumental in developing newborn
screening for congenital hypothyroidism. Its early detection and treatment prevents
mental retardation in children. He is a nationally recognized expert in pediatric
endocrinology and graduate medical education.
