2012 Service Excellence Award: Joe Juarez

Joe Juarez of TTP-Patient Services received the Service Excellence SPIRIT Award for “constantly striving to exceed the needs and expectations of patients and peers.”

A story submitted nominating Juarez:
“I want to nominate Joe Juarez for the service excellence aspect of the SPIRIT values. He is all encompassing of the patient’s needs from the time they walk in the door until they leave. He plays a vital role in the total patient visit experience. I am nominating Joe because he exemplifies service excellence 100 percent of the time at the Pavilion Information Desk. Joe has a glowing smile on his face and he is the first person patients see when they come into the Pavilion. He sets the service excellence tone for the entire clinic. His service excellence is contagious. Sick patients see Joe and their faces light up because he shares with them a joke or remembers their name. When I think of service excellence, I think of Joe Juarez. One of the senior attendant job duties is to make wheelchair runs from the clinic to the hospital or wherever a patient needs to be transported. One morning while Joe was training me, a call came in for a patient transport from a clinic in the Pavilion to the Emergency Room. Joe took the call and immediately grabbed a wheelchair and headed up to transport the patient to the ER. It turns out this patient was very sick and in pain. Joe ran the patient to the ER, which is a very long trip. During this time, Joe continued to ask the patient if they needed anything else and if they were doing okay. When we arrived at the ER, it was packed. Joe then stood in line with the patient at the ER check-in to make sure they were properly attended to. We did not come back to the clinic until the patient had been properly handed off to the next caregiver. When we were leaving, Joe put the patient at ease by telling him that there is transportation back to the TTUHSC parking lot after the ER visit. He talked about the TTUHSC Courtesy Shuttle and the UMC Shuttle. This example is just one of how Joe goes above and beyond at all times on the job. The most important thing to keep in mind is that being outstanding is in Joe’s DNA. He doesn’t even know how to not be. In his mind, he is just doing his job. He is a very humble man. Joe Juarez deserves to be recognized for his service excellence. I firmly believe that many of the patients and all of the TTUHSC staff he encounters would most certainly agree.”
