The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Reported on the Event:
Mittemeyer, chief of urological surgery at Tech’s Health Sciences Center, spoke of the sacrifice of veterans, noting some 50 million Americans have served in the military during the nation’s wars since independence from Great Britain.
“Louis Flores represents all the veterans in our country,” said Mittemeyer, whose Army service included a tour as a medical battalion commander and division surgeon for the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.
“Most of what they’ve experienced in war, they don’t want to remember.”
Mittemeyer told the crowd American democracy is protected by those in the military who carry out their orders “with the willingness to act regardless of the consequences.”
